Breaking Free From Tax Misconceptions
We get it, tax season can be intimidating for anyone who is not used to the software, lingo, and specifics. After being in the industry for over 30 years, we have heard almost everything as to why someone may not do their taxes. In this post we’ll go through some common misconceptions regarding the tax industry. Contrary to belief, we are here to help!
- “Filing taxes is always scary and stressful.”
This is one of the largest phrases we hear, and a major reason why people fail to file their taxes. It doesn’t have to be scary if you plan accordingly, ensure you have all of your recommended paperwork, and tools (such as software or a tax advisor).
- “CPAs and tax advisors just plug in numbers to a software.”
A good tax professional interprets the law, finds legal ways to save you money, and guides you through decisions and processes. While plugging in numbers is part of it, they are there to give you the best experience tailored to your situation.
- “If I make a mistake I’ll go to jail.”
The IRS does allow for corrections. There are forms you can file to amend your original return if there are things that need updated or corrected. Mistakes happen and they won’t penalize for it unless it’s malicious.
- “Tax advice is always one-size-fits-all.”
Tax advisors are there to guide you and help based on your specific needs. No two tax returns will be the same, and advisors work hard to identify and file all the correct forms and documents you need. If you want specific advice, look for a tax advisor that specializes in your category.
- “If I get audited, they’re going to find something wrong.”
Audits are not criminal investigations.
Most of them are minor and if they do find something, they likely will require documentation to clarify the situation. And, if you have a professional helping, you’re in good hands.
Don’t Let Tax Myths Hold You Back
At the end of the day, taxes don’t have to be confusing, overwhelming, or stressful. Many of the fears people have stem from outdated myths or misinformation. By understanding what’s true, you can approach tax season with clarity and confidence. Whether you file on your own or work with a professional, the most important thing is knowing you don’t have to go through it alone—and that small steps can make a big difference.
