Expat Taxes Are Due Soon — Are You Missing These Crucial Forms?

If you’re an U.S. citizen or green card holder living abroad, you’ve got a tax deadline coming up fast — June 15, 2025. However, since it lands on a Sunday, they are allowing for filings until the 16th. Payments are still required by June 15th.

While most Americans filed back in April, expats get an automatic two-month extension–but it’s not a free pass. You still need to file, and the penalties for missing the deadline or correct forms can be steep. That’s why we are making sure you know that expat taxes are due soon.

Most Common Forms Filed

🧾 Form 1040 – The U.S. Tax Return

You still have to file this even if you made all your money abroad—and even if you don’t owe anything. It’s your core return.

🌍 Form 2555 – Foreign Earned Income Exclusion

Earned a salary abroad? This form may help you exclude up to $120,000 from U.S. tax.

🏦 FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) – Foreign Bank Account Report

If your foreign bank accounts totaled over $10,000 at any point, you must file. Skipping it can cost up to $10,000+ per account per year in penalties.

Other filings could also be Form 1116, 8938, 8621, and 3520.

What Happens If you Don’t File?

Many expats think, “I don’t owe anything, so I’m probably fine.” But the IRS doesn’t see it that way. Missing or incorrectly filling out forms can lead to:

  • Automatic penalties, even if no tax is due
  • Frozen refunds
  • Loss of eligibility for tax exclusions/credits
  • Audits or compliance issues when you try to move assets, renounce, or return to the U.S.

For example:

Forgot your FBAR? That is a $10,000 penalty–per year, per account. Did you forget to file Form 3520 for a foreign inheritance? The IRS can fine you 25% of the value of that gift.
