When you are applying for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) using Form W-7, the IRS requires you to submit documents proving your identity and foreign status. One of the most commonly used documents is a passport.
The passport can be either:
Original, or
Certified copy (which may be necessary if you are submitting the application by mail or through a Certified Acceptance Agent).
What the U.S. Consulate Can Do?
If you’re applying for an ITIN and are submitting your passport as proof of identity and foreign status, the U.S. consulate can certify your passport. This means they can provide a certified copy of your passport that is recognized by the IRS for ITIN purposes.
This will reduce the risk of loosing your passport in the mail.
To get a certified copy of your passport from the U.S. consulate or embassy in your country.
-
- You will need to contact the consulate in advance to verify the process and schedule an appointment (if necessary), as the certification process may take time and could involve fees.
- Bring your original passport to the consulate for them to create the certified copy.
Once you submit the certified passport and Form W-7, the IRS will process your application for the ITIN. Having the passport properly certified can help ensure that the IRS accepts it without issue.
